Do not come to the Tobin Center looking for Jiminy Cricket. He’s no there. Call his name and you’ll hear crickets. There is, however, an artsy version of Pinocchio based on the Italian novel.

“This is a story by (Carlo) Collodi and it’s been interpreted in so many ways like the Disney version,” said Roberto Prestigiacomo, AtticRep’s artistic director.

Pinocchio at the Tobin Center is completely different from the film version. The performance, based on a story written in the late 1800s, does not include crickets. Instead AtticRep, the Tobin Center’s resident company, invited Teatro del Drago from Italy to present a unique rendering of hard work, honesty and bravery true to the Pinocchio premise.

The arts company putting on Pinocchio is a part of an arts family that have been putting on shows since the 1820s. The show at the Tobin, which runs through November 22, uses music, shadow theater and actors.

“This is definitely a show for the whole family,” said Prestigiacomo.
